OSI: Jessica from cookbookhabbit

Today we are featuring Jessica from cookbookhabbit.

Jessica chose for us the World Peace cookies, and I for one am so glad that she did.   These cookies were fabulous, and I ate all of them except 3, by hiding them.

1.  When did you start baking?

Unlike many of the other TWD bakers, I didn’t learn to bake as a child – my mother is a fantastic cook, but rarely baked anything beyond boxed-mix brownies. (It’s an Italian thing, I think.) However, I have always had a massive sweet tooth, so I started putting together very easy cookies, brownies, and the like in my teens. After college, my roommates and then my my husband became my captive taste-testers, and I’ve been going at it ever since.

2.  What is your favorite kitchen tool?

I don’t think I could live without my Microplane zester/grater. Or my Keurig coffee maker, for that matter.

3.  Which TWD blog is your favorite?

Another question I find hard to answer once. I learn so much from so many TWD bloggers, especially the ones who are balancing big jobs/lives/interests and TWD. The Tortefeasor and Chocolatechic crack me up. Engineer Baker is the perfect mix of sugar and science. I really could go on and on.


4.  What has been your favorite TWD recipe so far?

I loved the Extraordinary Lemon Cream Tart…and the Chocolate Pudding…and the French Pear Tart. Do I have to choose?

5.  What TWD recipe has been a dud for you?

Sadly, the Berry Surprise Cake. But I want to try, try again.

6.  Which recipe are you dying to make that no one has picked yet?

Stephanie of Confessions of a City Eater answered my prayers by choosing the Devil’s Food White Out Cake this month!

7.  If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

I think I’d be happiest being about to trot around the corner and grab a freshly made cappuccino and pastry for breakfast, so someplace – anyplace – in Italy.

8. If you knew could you try anything and not fail (and money was no object), what would you attempt?

As long as adequate time and free childcare were also included, I’d pursue some kind of graduate or professional degree, either law or library science.

9.  If you could have a superpower, which one would it be, and why?

Boundless energy, on-demand and renewable at all times.

10.  If you had a day to yourself, what would you do?

As the stay-at-home mother of one young child (with another coming very soon), I think about this a lot. I’d spend the day totally alone, probably reading. Maybe baking something too.

11.  What is the strangest food you have ever eaten?

I’ve tried rattlesnake, and yes, it tasted more or less like chicken. I was coerced into trying various kinds of offal as a child (again, an Italian thing). I’ll pretty much try anything now.

12.  What kitchen tool would you purchase for yourself if money were no object?

A fabulous gas range/electric oven combination that is properly calibrated, balanced, and easy to clean. Everything that my current one is not!


13.  Give us three adjectives to describe yourself.

Adaptable, occasionally cantankerous, and curious.

14.  What spice do you use over and over again?

It appears to be cinnamon, since I just put it on my grocery list again. My daughter likes to sprinkle it on everything. We also go through a fair amount of kosher salt, if that counts.

15.  When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A novelist.

  1. You just reminded me of a dream I had last night – I pulled from the oven a perfectly baked genoise. That’s it. It was a wonderful dream – unlike the reality of my fallen hidden berry cake. It’s probably a signal that it should be made again.
