Baking with Julia
So excited for this one at my house. I love cardamom and I love cake! It’s a win!
Thinking this might be good for Christmas morning.
Definitely! I put a couple of pieces in the freezer to save for a holiday breakfast treat.
I was a bit underwhelmed by this one, but it’s certainly a good keeper.
Any suggestions, Mary? More spice? More????
Don’t skimp on the cardamom! I ran out and didn’t have any for the topping. I also wasn’t sure about cardamom+coffee+orange, so left the orange out, but I thought it needed something.
Ever had a snack cake made from a mix? That’s what this reminded me of.
I used fresh cardamom and thought there was plenty of cardamom flavor. It was awesome combined with orange, so I highly recommend using the zest. I couldn’t taste the coffee.
Yes, I always use fresh cardamom too. I could taste the coffee in mine, maybe because I left the orange out. I’ll have to make this one again.
I have made this probably a dozen times. Its a household favorite.
I haven’t baked with cardamom much so I’m excited to try this, sounds yummy!
I opened up the little bag labeled cardamon and concluded that it is ancient. There was no fragrance at all! Tossed it and will bake this cake with fresh cardamon.
Next time I’ll add more orange. We loved the way it went iwth the cardamon. But we could barely taste the coffee. Nice and moist!
So I get that it is called Cardamom crumb cake but I don’t have any cardamom and it’s a little tricky for me to track it down at the moment. Can I use nutmeg or cinnamon instead?
I think if you used fresh grated nutmeg, that would turn into a tasty offshoot of the original recipe – it has a similar level of pungency to fresh cardamom.
I don’t have any cardamom either and will probably use a combo of spices.
Im going to get my rear in gear and try to make this today. My daughters birthday is this week and I swear that girl has me baking all week!! I will search in my spice rack for some cardamom..not sure if I have any. If I don’t Im using nutmeg like Caitlin suggested!
I am going to have to pass on this one.
It is so close to Christmas and I already have so much sweet in the house.
What would I replace the coffee with????
I am thinking of using buttermilk/milk or a combination of fresh orange juice and buttermilk.
I couldn’t taste the coffee (or at least it wasn’t obvious to me). Orange juice sounds like a good idea since there’s orange zest in the cake.
I just used water. The cake seems way orange-y enough with 3 T. of zest. Milk would work, too. I only used 2% for the milk in the recipe.
In the oven. I made it into mini loaves to give as gifts……even though I haven’t tried it before. Daring!
I might be way off….but could you use orange juice for coffee?

Doubled the recipe and made mini-loaf cakes to give away to friends/co-workers. Cute! http://dailynibbles.com/2010/12/20/in-the-kitchen-cardamom-crumb-cakes/
After making this I have discovered that I don’t like cardamom. Oh well.
