i love rhubarb passionately…waiting anxiously to see if it’s going to make it to market before tuesday
I found my love for rhubarb just last year when I made my first strawberry-rhubarb bar. I’ve been addicted ever since :) Is there a good site that I could reference for in-season produce though? I live in NE and I never seem to know when things are locally growing.
I will probably have to rewind as there is no chance for rhubarb this early where I live. Sigh.
I love strawberries but rhubarb….not so much.
Im not seeing rhubarb anywhere in my town. Im going to just make it with strawberries!!
I realized that I used up my last frozen stash from last summer. Waaaaaaahh! I’m thinking strawberry as well.
My rhubarb is just coming up. Another month or so and I will have garden fresh rhubarb.
What to do??
I’m going to sit this one out. See you for the apple tart.
Frozen rhubarb is readily available, I think, and should be fine in this recipe.
Ciao , I never saw rhubarb around in any form !
There is no rhubarb here. :( So you all think I can just use strawberries. Oh Nancy I see there is frozen rhubarb. Good thinking.
I’ve never used rhubarb before, so I’ll see if I like it! I’m not sure if I will be able to get fresh. We had snow last night so spring has not yet arrived.
I just looked at the recipe and I have another issue. I am allergic to oatmeal. Anyone have any ideas on what to sub for that that might work? crushed butter cookies? help!!!
I made this one last year and it is in my top three recipes from the book- so good. Now to just track down rhubarb- I think we’re all on the same mission!
I tired three grocery stores (2 via phone), no luck on the rhubarb search. Instead I went all strawberry, with lime zest rubbed into the sugar. Delicious! :)
I have a bag of frozen rhubarb in my freezer – I either got it at Whole Foods or Trader Joes and I think it was Whole Foods. Now I just need to pick up strawberries and I am set – though I love rhubarb so much I am tempted to go straight with that. We shall see.
In the next few weeks I will begin receiving my weekly fruit share from the great Agriberry Farms. I may have to do a rewind on this one when I get my first batch of strawberries from them. I might get out-voted on that by my friends, though. Last year with the last of my berries I whipped up some freezer jam. Talk about a hit! It tastes just a like a summer day – I am salivating on my keyboard – what a mess!
Like Valerie, I went all over in search of rhubarb, but could not even find the imported stuff. I ended buying a jar of Bon Maman rhubarb compote and the results were great. Can’t wait for fresh rhubarb!
Mary, I’m surprised that you don’t have a hidden stash of rhubarb, I was almost going to ask you for some. :D
I did, but I finished it in January. It was a sad, sad day.
:(
No rhubarb in Mexico. See you next week. And being from the midwest originally, I love rhubarb. Sigh!
I’m feeling really happy to have found rhubarb, I can’t wait to try this!
I’m thinking of trying the suggestion Kayte gave me–cranberries in place of the rhubarb. I have some in the freezer still. I don’t really like rhubarb, but would like something tart in the crisp. I don’t think I’ve ever tried strawberry with cranberry, either.
Whoa, that sounds awesome. I might try making both variations. Crisp are wonderful in any form, so having more won’t be a big problem!
There’s almost never fresh rhubarb here but I’ve used frozen rhubarb and it’s turned out great!
I do have frozen cranberries….just might try it.
I’m going the cranberry route as well.
I found some frozen rhubarb last night in the store and was so excited, I screamed, “YES!!!” and pumped my fist… then my bf looked at me and said, “Easy there!” :)
Hehehe. I’ve been to four stores and have struck out every time. Bah.
You are all making me hungry for rhubarb/strawberry something or other!
Rhubarb is not quite in season yet. Can’t find it anywhere. Will play around with other things with strawberry. Chocolate crisp anyone? haha
Too bad it’s too late to try to switch Sarah and Valerie’s weeks as rhubarb might be more available in a few weeks.
i got fresh rhubarb just 2 weeks ago and now can’t find it at the store! kroger does have frozen though, so if i can’t find it again i’ll use that. sorry for the lack of availability everyone!
I found gorgeous fresh rhubarb at Kroger today, yay! I called about five different places and they were the first ones that had it in stock. Can’t wait to try this, fruit desserts are my favorite!
Frozen rhubarb works just fine. Found mine at Publix.
I FINALLY found fresh rhubarb–if anyone is in NYC they have it at Whole Foods now.
On Caitlin (engineerbaker)’s suggestion, I cut the sugar in the strawberry filling by about a quarter and this crisp was perfectly bright. It’s a top 10 recipe, for sure!!
I didn’t even see Caitlin’s suggestion, but thought 1 cup sure seemed like a lot of sugar, so I only used 1/2 cup. It’s perfect and fine.
I made mine with strawberries and it was delicious! My fav. part is the crisp!!
I ended up using frozen rhubarb. They had fresh at Whole Foods but it was really expensive. Frozen worked just great.
